Neca Gremlins 2 Mohawk (ver 2) Review

Last year NECA released a version 2.0 of their Mohawk figure from the movie Gremlins 2. I never got the first release when it came out so I welcomed the announcement, visually it's a great character and I feel NECA outdid themselves on this one. Bah if only I had bought the Mohawk Mogwai figure!

Enjoy the pics n review!

Of course Mohawk was kind of the leader of the 'new batch' of Gremlins in the 1990 movie sequel. Although I always found it interesting that technically there are two antagonist Gremlins in the sequel, Mohawk and the Brain Gremlin. Mohawk is clearly just a ramping up of the character Stripe from the first film and totally has his own agenda to just inflict misery on Gizmo,  Brains on the other hand is the mastermind behind the Gremlins bid for freedom and can be seen as the actual leader I guess.

Here's a pop fact though, according to the director Joe Dante, Mohawk is the reincarnation of Stripe, come back for revenge after being burnt to death by sunlight. I suppose it's backed up by the fact Mohawk immediately knows Gizmo and Billy's name on first sight. GIZMO CACA!

Sculpt: I love every inch of his bumpy, slimey n spiney body, he's great. The overall detail in the sculpt is great. I know as a kid this figure would have blown me away. Although the figure is fully articulated, but the way NECA have sculpted his body means his joints don't really jump out at you that much. I love it when figures have that going for them. It's just my personal opinion but I'd say this is NECA's best gremlin to date.

Paint: I absolutely can't knock the paint job on this figure! It's bright and vivid and applied very neatly. He stands out massively from the other Gremlins that NECA have released. The red fish like mohawk/spine really sets him apart from the other Gremlins. NECA sometimes has a swing and a miss on their paint jobs once the figure hits mass production but not here. Of course it took them two figures to get it right so you'd expect it to be good ha.

Articulation: The 'Gremlins' line has come on leaps and bounds since the early attempts at the creatures. Firstly I'm pleased to say he stands on his own well. The Gremlin figures tend to be top heavy due to their large heads but Mohawk seems to stand better than previous figures, perhaps the spin helps in that respect? I'd still be cautious about putting him up high on ledges though.

In terms of joints, he has ball jointed shoulders, hips and ankles. He also has a swivel joint at the elbow and knees. You can also get a little motion out of his wrists too, I think it's a swivel joint too. His neck is a little bit restricted like all of the Gremlins but you can get him looking up and down fairly easily.

He also has an articulated mouth so you can open or shut his trap, it's a simple but a nice touch.
Overall his articulation is pretty good but not great. I'm a bit torn when deciding if they should have gone for double joints and sacrifice the sculpt a little. I'd love to see NECA release something like an 'ultimate poseable' Gremlin.

Accessories: He comes with the Uzi 9mm gun as pictured and that's it! They really should have thrown in a science beaker (spider DNA Serum), it was included in the first release of Mohawk and the Spider mutation I believe, oh well. The overall high quality of the figure makes up for the lack of fiddly bits I guess, and (at least on initial release) the price wasn't too high at around 25 quid.

I'm pretty sure Mohawk would turn his nose up at sugar free, but here it is anyway for scale.

In conclusion he's a really great figure and a no brain buy for any fan. NECA really need to do a Stripe version 2 figure like they've done here. Their first Stripe figure looks pretty poor compared to the newer stuff.

NECA have also released the Mogwai version of Mohawk and the Spider mutation so you can complete his life cycle. God knows why but I kind of went off buying the Gremlins stuff for a while so I missed out. Good news though NECA have also recently said they are re-releasing the Spider mutation! I immediately pre-ordered it. Look out for the review in a couple month when he's released.
